Questions to ask your doctor — for diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up
A nurse advocate's list of the questions that actually change outcomes — sorted by the moment you're in, from new diagnosis to follow-up visit.
Asking the right question, at the right moment, is one of the highest-leverage things a patient or family member can do. Here are the ones I prepare with clients, organized by the moment you're in.
When you receive a new diagnosis
- What exactly is this diagnosis, in plain language?
- How confident are you in it, and what would change your mind?
- What are my options — including doing nothing right now?
- What does the evidence say about outcomes for each option?
- How will this affect what I can do day to day?
- Is this the kind of diagnosis where a second opinion is worth it?
Before starting a new treatment or medication
- What is this treatment supposed to do, and how will we know if it is working?
- What are the most likely side effects, and which ones should I call about?
- How does it interact with my other medications?
- What happens if I don't start it?
- How long am I expected to be on it?
Before a procedure or surgery
- How often do you do this procedure?
- What are the realistic risks, including the rare-but-serious ones?
- What does recovery actually look like — week by week?
- What happens if I wait, or choose not to do this at all?
- Who is in charge of my care after the procedure, and how do I reach them?
At every follow-up visit
- What has changed since we last met?
- What is the plan from here, and what is my part?
- What should I watch for between now and the next visit?
- When and how do I follow up?
Frequently asked questions
What questions should I ask my doctor at a first appointment?
Ask what the diagnosis is in plain language, how confident the doctor is, what all the options are (including doing nothing), what the evidence shows for outcomes, how the diagnosis affects daily life, and whether a second opinion is worth pursuing.
What should I ask before starting a new medication?
Ask what the medication is supposed to do and how you will know it is working, the most likely side effects and which ones to call about, interactions with your other medications, how long you'll be on it, and what happens if you don't start it.
What should I ask before a surgery or procedure?
Ask how often the surgeon does this specific procedure, the realistic risks including the rare-but-serious ones, what recovery actually looks like week by week, what happens if you wait, and who is in charge of your care afterward.
